Building Relationships - Two Million in One Day
by Candace Greene on January 28, 2009Surreal. That’s the only way to describe standing amidst upwards of two million people in the country’s capital during what some will remember as the most important day in our history. Like many, I was apprehensive about making the treacherous, 13-hour trip to Washington, D.C. for President Barack Obama’s inauguration and the surrounding festivities, but knew that I would regret missing it—considering I had a place to sleep upon arriving. The weekend in the District was filled with excitement and I can honestly say that I’ve never seen DC “city-dwellers” and “out-of-towners” get along so well. The receptions were orchestrated……
Email Hell
by Karen Moore on January 16, 2009Are you as frustrated with the emails that you receive as I am? First of all, the volume is overwhelming. I receive more than 300 per day—and that is after all the spam filters have eliminated the inappropriate, vulgar and just plain stupid ones. I have a personal policy that all my emails must be responded to within one hour, or never longer than 24 hours after receipt. So, as many folks know, I am responding to emails at 3:00 AM. That would not be so bad if the quality of the email were worthy of a 3:00 AM review!……
Inaugural Thoughts for a New Year
by Jim Hunt on January 13, 2009Is the true hope for change based on politics? New year, new president, new directions for our country. Truly an exciting time for America regardless of our personal political preferences. For months we were inundated with the mantra for change through national, state and local political campaigns. The biggest change of late may be what is seen as the official end of the “me era.” People are no longer obsessed with themselves and what they can do to best the other guy. There is a genuine shift in direction for people reaching out to help others and it goes far……
Tallahassee's New Resource for News
by Jim Hunt on January 13, 2009Last week the WFLA-FM Morning Show featured a guest who is bringing a new perspective to local news in Tallahassee. What caught my interest is that this individual is not a journalist. Stephen Stewart is a local businessman who has spearheaded a new site that provides just-the-facts reporting on local news and issues. TallahasseeReports.com was created to resurrect investigative journalism in the capital city. From tracking the funding sources provided to local events and programs to investigating our city’s green initiatives, Tallahassee Reports provides unbiased research and reports and invites community members to join in the discussion and offer additional information and……
The Heart of Florida's Economy
by Nanette Schimpf on January 08, 2009In today’s challenging economic climate, our state leaders and key organizations, including the Florida Sterling Council, are fighting for small businesses with the understanding that small businesses are the heart of Florida’s economy. In Florida, there are nearly 1.5 million firms considered non-employer firms (the one-man shops that have no paid employees). There are another half of a million companies with 1-99 employees. Small businesses create most of the nation’s new net jobs, and they bring exceptional ideas, innovative products, and that undeniable “failure is not an option” mentality, or mantra for some. Our future lies with those brave souls.……
